Rate my Argument - 3 (out of 6)

The author concludes that the rise in the number of immigrant workers has led to a downfall in the average wage of unskilled labor. He supports his argument based on data collected over the past 5 years. However, the author uses his conclusion based on certain assumptions for which there may not be enough evidence.
Firstly, the author is correlating the number of immigrant workers coming into his community with the decline in wages. He fails to establish there could be several other reasons for this downfall. There may be other reasons for this to happen. For example, the industries in which the labors were working may have shut their businesses down or in other words, manufacturing less goods and products for the market. Hence, thereby not making enough revenue to increase the wages. The argument would be strengthened if the write used concrete examples to assert that the inflow of new workers was causing decline in wages.
Secondly, the author cites 10% decline in wages over past years. The authenticity of this source needs to be verified as he mentions the decline in the city as whole and not within the community. The statistical data pertaining to city might not be synchronous with the results in community. May be the workers are getting paid more in local communities and not cities. The argument would considerably be strengthened in view of various environmental factors such as geographical location of industries and well being of workers working there.
Finally, the author also doesnt mention the nature of job of immigrant workers. He has not categorised them as skilled or unskilled. We need to know the percentage figure inflow of workers coming into his community and their categorisation details. This is important as it may turn out that skilled labor is more adept in their work and hence making more wages in the community (assuming there is also more demand for them) than unskilled labor. Only if the author provides evidence about the demand and supply scale of the workers and corresponding wages along with factors affecting each class, will then the the evidence be strong and argument hold.
